Sparta’s ‘weird’ city meetings now likely to change to ‘normal’

SPARTA, MO — You normally expect to hear and see elected officials in public meetings. But Sparta, MO has had a series of meetings, sources say, that reflect a weird custom of city aldermen and the mayor hiding behind a high table and mumbling among themselves conducting public business.

“You can’t see them above their noses,” one resident said.

“They turn towards each other and talk in hushed tones; you can’t hear anything they’re saying (during board of aldermen meetings),” said another.

That’s. Just. Weird.

Even for a small town.

“They haven’t been keeping minutes or records the way they should,” said another resident.

Those situations should shift to normal, open, easily heard and seen public meetings soon. At least, that’s the expectation with newly elected Mayor Misty Holt, who claimed 64% of the vote April 4 over incumbent Jenni Davis’s 36%.

Now that the people have spoken, maybe they can hear (and see) elected officials when they speak!

EXTRA: Today is outgoing Mayor Jenni Davis’s birthday … Happy birthday!
