Why my gift of encouragement now means more than ever

OLDFIELD, MO — If you know anything about spiritual gifts, they are listed in the Bible. Romans chapter 12 verse 8 lists the gift of “encouragement.”

As a Christ follower, I am called to a life mission of encouraging others. All believers have various gifts, but I know mine is the gift of encouragement.

An example of that was recently demonstrated in a text message from a friend I’m helping in a campaign.

Here is a screenshot of part of his message:

It’s humbling to see God’s work in my life. To see my gift of encouragement in action. My reflection isn’t about me; it’s about a loving Savior, Jesus Christ, who set us a good example that I feel compelled to follow it.

Another co-worker of mine (I’m the marketing ambassador for 5 area Papa John’s pizza stores) is a general manager of a store. He said recently, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Again, I’m humbled to be part of a system to reach people in such specific ways.

My interactions with area store managers is one of compassion and honest communication. Another store manager last week shared tough times he’s facing with business losses, personal issues and vehicle problems all hitting at once. I listened and offered help in any way I could. I got on the phone with my trusted mechanic right then and there to diagnose a possible vehicle remedy as the young man made a pizza and listened in.

Last Sunday, after Sunday school, I encouraged an older couple with a relevant life story to share their experiences with a larger audience. “It’s not about you; it’s about an audience you’ll never meet, that will be impacted deeply,” I told them. I’m doing another session with a candidate this week, and asked if yet another candidate could sit in with us. “I want to help all the people I can,” I said. My candidate friend agreed. I already got them together on a question the newer candidate had.

I’m meeting with another friend this week to offer encouragement on a writing project.

I hope you who are of the faith in Jesus can express your spiritual gifts and use them daily.
