SPRINGFIELD, MO — I am a marketing ambassador for Papa John’s pizza. I promote five stores, three in Springfield (Glenstone, Campbell, Kearney) and the store in Ozark near Lambert’s Cafe, and the one in Joplin on 20th and Main.
Part of my duties include helping schools realize they can get a 10% donation from one night per month sales from the nearest Papa John’s. The public orders pizza anyway, so the school will always get a check each month. Pretty cool. We notify the school and provide fliers and signs to advertise the pizza night so families can order pizza on their own and help support their school.
So, I was at Bissett Elementary School on West Calhoun Street (not the safest neighborhood) and I smell marijuana in the air, strong, as I approach the building. Hmm. These are different times, indeed. I drop off my information at the front desk and hand the school staff discount cards with my personal code on it. ROOSTER30 is what you enter under “deals” when ordering from any Springfield, Ozark, or the Joplin store for 30% off all menu items!
I get 5% of that order on top of the customer saving 30%, so it’s win-win! I love being the Santa Claus of Pizza!
On the way back to my car, I handed everyone waiting in the pick up line (it was afternoon and parents were lining up in their vehicles to pick up their kids) a discount ROOSTER30 card. Including the car with the “weed smoke” emitting from it. The mom rolled down her window as I approached, and it was obvious the window wasn’t the only thing that was rolled…
anyway, I handed it to her, politely, as if she were not doing anything unusual. It is, indeed, illegal to smoke weed on school grounds, or in a private vehicle while driving, in the City of Springfield. To me, it would be like driving around with a can of beer in your hand at an elementary school, just a tad bid outside the norm.
I went back to my car after handing out the other discount cards to the other parents and pulled out my phone, from a distance, and recorded a 17 second clip about the incident.

The video saw 1.5 thousand views in a short while, but no comments. I posted it on Facebook and, wow, the comments defending the mom and telling me to “mind my own business” flooded in. A few people were appalled, but the majority of our culture is totally good with a mom taking a hit on a joint waiting in the lane for her kid on school property.
What are your thoughts? I’m sure many reader will think I’m nosey and out of line; my point is, where is our society headed? Why is pot smoking such a big pull and seemingly so necessary and so staunchly defended by parents of small children these days?
As a delivery person, I encounter a lot of weed smoke inside homes with young children present. It’s amazing to me. It’s beyond my comprehension. Alcohol is legal, too, but I don’t advocate for someone drinking booze in excess around kiddos, either. What are your thoughts, readers?
