GUEST EDITORIAL

By definition, CRONYISM is a form of corruption where an individual with influence provides preferential treatment, appointments, or advantages to friends, associates, or loyal supporters, regardless of their qualifications or merit. It is often motivated by political gain. This practice can undermine fairness, efficiency, and integrity within organizations, often undermining ethical guidelines.”

Ozark’s current mayor, Don Currence is “knee-deep” in cronyism.

  1. Last April, Currence appointed Jim Metcalf to fill an alderman vacancy in Ozark’s north ward.  The reason that he gave was: “I’ve known Jim for about 30 years and go to church with him, I consider him to be a good friend”.
  2. Also last April, Currence successfully advocated the approval that Alderman Bruce Galloway serve as Mayor Pro tem (Vice Mayor).  Bruce is the husband of Sarah Adams Orr; Sarah is the daughter of Mary Adams; Mary is the Treasurer for Don Currence’s political campaign for mayor.  This is the second consecutive term that Currence has done this, even though it was explained to him that about a decade ago, the city’s Mayor Pro tem advised that he was not interested in serving a second term because he felt the position should not lend to “an air of favoritism”; and the other 5 alderemen deserved to be recognized.
  3. The mayor has a reasonable obligation to begin City Council meetings at the appointed date and time stated on the posted agenda.  Don Currence does not abide by that obligation.  Specifically, on one occasion, Alderman Bruce Galloway was ill and would not be in attendance.  Although there were enough aldermen present to conduct city business, Don Currence would not begin the meeting.  Instead, due to his concern about a vote that may be cast, he made an obvious attempt to manipulate the outcome of that vote. He got on his phone and while pacing the floor, after about 20 minutes, he was successful in getting Alderman Galloway, albeit visibly very sick, to attend the meeting via ZOOM.
  4. Last summer, an alderman vacancy occurred in Ozark’s south ward.  Mayor Currence had the choice of choosing Ronnie White or Chris Aiken.  Mr. White is a patriot in every sense of the word.  Mr. Aiken, according to county records, has never voted in an Ozark city election. Don Currence sought out Mr. Aiken to fill the vacancy.

These are just 4 examples of cronyism that have occurred under the mayorship of Don Currence.
